@Barry, I agree that one should be able to teach Systems Theory, which I consider very different than trying to teach Systems Thinking. Bertalanffy referred to Systems Thinking as a worldview and Senge referred to it as a discipline. I think both of those perspectives could be valid even though very different. Yet, I don't think I can teach a worldview, and a discipline is something one learns over time though isn't taught. Systemic Perspective on the other hand (that makes 3 hands I think) has been defined as a process that one can learn and follow and if applied with some rigor and critical thought several individuals are likely to arrive at similar conclusions. So I think I can teach the Systemic Perspective development process even though I can't teach Systems Thinking. http://bit.ly/9UcSGV

This discussion makes me bring to mind (from 30 years ago) 10 axioms of “systems thinking”
What happened? Has “systems thinking” cast these axioms aside?

A system is composed of parts.
All the parts of a system must be related (directly or indirectly), else there are really two more distinct systems
A system is encapsulated, has a boundary.
The boundary of a system is a decision made by an observer, or a group of observers.
A system can be nested inside another system.
A system can overlap with another system.
A system is bounded in time.
A system is bounded in space, though the parts are not necessarily co-located
A system receives input from the wider environment. *
A system sends output into the wider environment. *

* I cannot imagine such thing as a closed system.

A couple people have asked if I could coach them through a model development and then present that model in one of the future STW Webinars. 		+	Someone mentioned the other day that they were interested in developing a model though they thought there were far more educated people in the arena and I could sense they were feeling somewhat intimidated.
