Many chronic diseases are preceded by abnormal mechanisms or predispositions. Diabetes is preceded by glucose intolerance, where the response to a glucose load or meal is abnormal, despite having a normal fasting blood glucose and no persistently elevated blood or urine glucose. This is known as prediabetes.
